What do you spend on Sport?
On page 2 of your text book is Table 1-1: Consumer Spending on Organized Sport $213 Billion a Year. As you look at the different categories where money is spent on sport, which categories have you contributed money to? Share an example with the class of how much you spent in one of the categories listed.

After taking a look at the consumer spending numbers listed in the chart I found that I have spent money in many of the areas that were listed. The example I am sharing was my most recent sporting event that I attended. I purchsed some Twolves tickets for the game on Jan. 1st in which they played the Orlando Magic which is one of my favorite teams. However I didn't just purchase tickets while I was online I also purchased some Magic apparel for the game. Just that simple one game that I attended I influenced multiple areas of the consumer spending chart.
ReplyDeleteOver the years I have spent a lot of money on sport equipment and going to sporting events. My most recent purchase was a pair of Nike running shoes that i got for around $100. I usually go through a pair of basketball shoes (in HS) or runnning shoes every year, so I probably spent over $700 as of now just on shoes for the sports I partake in.
ReplyDeleteIn my life I have spent alot of money on different areas from the consumer spending chart. Whether it be traveling or attending sporting events or buying sports apparel I have made many purchases related to sport. My most recent purchase was a football jersey in which i spent $90 dollars on. Growing up I would get a new pair of bsketball shoes every year so that added up to be hundreds of dollars.
ReplyDeleteLooking at this chart makes me realize exactly how much money is spent in the sport industry, on the consumer side and the marketing side. But when it comes down to the one category that i relate to the most it would have to be equipment, apparel, and footwear. My entire life I have bought equipment for my sport hobbies. I have been a baseball player since I can remember and have always purchased either new cleats, baseball gloves, apparel to wear, or baseball bats. When you think about it, this all adds up very fast. Parents realize it right away, but as a kid you were just more excited to get all your new stuff to show it off. Baseball has been my life, I wish a really knew exactly how much money I have contributed to this number in the book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Adam...it is interesting to see just how much money is spent in each area of the sport industry. I also have contributed most to the Equipment/Apparel/Footwear category. Playing three organized sports throughout the year required a lot of new and different equipment. I also purchase apparel in support of my favorite teams. I spend way too much money at stores like Nike and Finishline buying shoes I want rather than need. The amount of money spent over the last 5-10 years is easily over a thousand dollars.
ReplyDeleteI have spent the most money in the equipment/apparel category as well. Playing sports is a big part in my life and watching sports are also important to me. Buying jerseys, shoes, cleats and other equipment has always been a way I spend my money.
ReplyDeleteThe areas of sport that I have spent the most money is are equipment/apparel/footwear and spectator sports. I buy a lot of softball equipment, jerseys/uniforms and athletic shoes. I also attend sporting events where I have to buy tickets and spend money at the concessions. I probably spent about $500 dollars on spectator sports this summer on attending twins games and gopher football.
ReplyDeleteI would say I have spent the most money in the equipment/apparel category. Between shoes, regular clothing, active clothing, and other things I bet I have spent a few bucks on because they are something that is "needed" to be in sport nowadays.
ReplyDeleteAs a participant in sport, that is where the money goes for me. One summer I spent $400 to $500 on a mtn. trail running marathon with a friend in Wyoming. Costs included travel to the event, registration fees, and any appropriate gear, plus the race day food and post race need for food.
ReplyDeleteOn another note: How many of you have spent money on TV packages or pay-per-view events on TV?
Finally, where do you think future spending will go?
It is hard not to spend money in many of these categories. There are so many resources used to enjoy or be involved in sports and recreation. I am in a bowling league on Wednesdays. There are five members to make a team and there are eight teams in the league. Each team puts in $75 each night of bowling. I did the math one night and it adds up to be a lot of money for team fees that the Association gets for operations.

ReplyDeleteGrowing up playing soccer and working-out regularly I would have to say that most of my money has gone to the Equipment/Apparel/Footwear category. Every year, or every other year was another pair of cleats, jerseys, running shoes, all which on average cost about $100.00 a piece. That’s a lot of money. Another category that I have racked up some money in is def. in the category of Spectator Sports. Most recently I bought tickets to a Minnesota Wild game. We sat 5 rows up from the on the red line and our tickets were 115.00 a piece.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, most of my money went to sports memoriablia. I collected pennets, sports cards, jerseys, etc. To this day I have a closet full of collectables at my parents house. I grew up in a blue collar family, never really had the money to spend on extravagant things such as going to sporting events, allowing us to play hockey (expensive), etc. Today I spend a lot more on sports in the aspect of playing and watching as a fan. For the first Packer Vs. Vikings game I spent well over $300 for the packaged deal and Brett Favre jersey. Minnesota Wild tickets and jersy over $200. As I grow so do my tastes and things are getting more and more expensive.
ReplyDeleteI was in four different sports in high school and I know from personal experience that equipment prices add up...cheap or not. Just shoes alone for all my sports for four years probably added up to be $1600! So I'm not surprised at all.
ReplyDeleteI have spent a lot of money over the years on sports apparel. Most of my money now is spent on athletic shoes, but in high school I was in swimming and track. We usually went through at least 2 suits a year which were about $80-$100 a piece. Track spikes were about $150 a pair and were replaced yearly as well.
ReplyDeleteI have contributed to the sports equipment cash flow. Last spring I stated umpping MSHL baseball and softball games. League fee’s and association dues were about $75 for the year, and for equipment I spent around $400 on basic ump gear like chest protector, shin guards, face mask, etc. etc.

I have spent a lot of money especially during High School on sports equipment/apparel. Things I have bought include athletic shoes, under armor, and football gloves. I would say each year I would spend close to $250 on equipment alone for sports.
ReplyDeleteI have spent money on many of the different areas, however I have spent the most on equipment and apparel. Growing up as a kid I played two of the most expensive sports to play which are hockey and golf. For example, spending $500 on a pair of skates, or $900 on a new set of irons.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty close to the same as everyone else. In my high school years, my expenses in sports mainly came from buying equipment or participation fees. Since high school I have spent some money on participation fees, i.e. boot hockey, golf, etc. but I would say I spend more on spectator events today. Per year I imagine I spend roughly $1,500-$2,000 on sports equipment, apparel, participation fees, spectating, gambling(fantasy football or march madness), etc.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Lance, In high school I didn't attend as many sports events, but I did spend a fair amount of money on equipment and participation fees to be involved in sports. Now that I am no longer playing sports as much, mostly just intermurals, where I already have the equipment to play them, my spending on sports has changed. I try and go to at least two wild games a year which is a pretty expensive event to attend. I also, like to attend the WCHA Final Five and the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, which can also be pretty expensive because of the number of games. Ive gone to about 5 or more twins games the past few summers which are cheaper to attend but I attend more of them. I would definatly have to say that the majority of my sports spending is on attending events, and just a little on actually purching sports products.
